Windows 8 only: We previously looked at FooIRC, which as the name hints is a IRC client for Windows 8 and it comes bundled with many great features, but the app cost about $1.50. Despite the fair price for what you get, there are also some other free alternatives like, for example, IRC Messenger. IRC Messenger Windows 8 app doesn’t offer all the features that can be found in traditional Windows desktop applications or as many found in FooIRC. However, it is an easy to use app, it has all the basic options to connect and it uses the chat service, and with the price tag of free, you can not ask for more.

IRC Messenger has a clean user interface that matches Windows 8 “Modern” design and it is simple to use, that is, of course, if you are already used to IRC programs. If not, it could be a bit tricky finding the options or simply connecting to a server. Additionally, there are some essential features that are missing from this app such as: No SSL, keyboard shortcuts to switch between servers or automated commands upon server connections. And this Windows Store app does not have support for Windows RT — For Surface and other PC with ARM-based chipset.
